How to make your pants fit perfectly is another popular class. Students will learn the secrets used by professional tailors and dressmakers to make pants that fit well and look great. How to make a Pattern from your favorite Finished Clothes is a new class this year. Students will learn how to reproduce that favorite shirt or pants. We will also be offering workshops for Halloween costumes, check our website for the latest information and schedules.
Claflin Academy gets new logo We have a new logo! Our good friend Brian Freeman of Crystal Castle Graphics designed it. Besides being an excellent graphic artist, Brian is also an amazing musician specializing in Celtic music. We hope you get an opportunity to hear him play at some point. Visit his website, www.brianfreemanmusic.com, and check out his cd’s. Better yet attend one of his concerts. There is nothing like a live performance. You will find his website listed on our links page. While you’re there check out Brian’s kilt. It’s one of Mary’s creations. Mary’s Chat Corner Hi Everyone! First thanks for your patience in waiting for me to get around to Claflin Academy’s first newsletter. I will do my best to keep you updated on what has been happening. Claflin Academy has been accepting clients for a year now and I must admit that it has gone in a different direction then I anticipated. I assumed my students would primarily be adults, but I have been very pleasantly surprised to find many of my students range in age from 10-15. I am really enjoying working with them, I find they are dedicated and have wonderful ideas. I am also very excited to have the Academy partnering with Jeanette’s Fabrics in Phoenix. I am looking forward to working with Kathy, Pat, Elaine, and Cynthia as we expand the services offered by both the Academy and Jeanette’s Happy sewing—Mary Claflin Academy partners with Jeanette’s Fabrics
This fall Claflin Academy will be partnering with Jeanette’s Fabrics in Phoenix. Mary will be teaching several special sewing classes for Jeanette’s. There will be at least one beginning class as well as a class geared for specifically for teens. The class will be centered around the new “Make it You” line of fabrics carried by Jeanette’s. We are also looking into the idea of a couple of special holiday classes such as a workshop for Halloween costumes and a special Christmas class. For more information check the Academy website or stop by Jeanette’s Fabrics. September is National Sewing Month September is National Sewing Month. We encourage you to sew for your favorite charity. If you don’t have one check and see if there is a local chapter of the American Sewing Guild. The neighborhood groups sew for national and local charities. Also check your local fabric stores, often they support hospitals and other local charities. For example, Hancock’s supports St. Jude’s Children Hospital with their Quilts of Dreams. You could also check local nursing and adult foster care homes, as they often need articles for their residents. Some police departments are starting to carry teddy bears and small quilts for children who are victims of violence. Your local hospital may need items for their nurseries. So look around and see where you can make a difference, it might be small, but it still counts and helps someone who needs you. Murphy’s Law “If you drop anything from your sewing kit, it will be the box of pins . . . with the cover off.” Sewing Tips Put a Bead Behind That Button Sew a button in place as normal. For the last two passes of
the needle, sew a small bead (about 1/16 to 1/4 in. diameter) over the stitches
on the inside of the garment. I usually match the bead to the fashion fabric,
but you could use a wildly different color as an accent.
“Every Generation laughs at the old fashions, but follows religiously the new.” Henry David Thoreau |
